Pharmacy Readiness Survey
The Health & Recovery Services Administration (HRSA) continues Application of July 1, 2008, Preferred Drug List Until October 20, 2008. The Washington State Healthcare Authority Prescription Drug Program has announced changes to the Washington State Preferred Drug List (PDL) to be implemented on October 1, 2008. HRSA will not implement these changes to the Washington PDL on October 1, 2008. Scheduled implementation of the October Washington PDL will continue for both UMP and L & I. See Memo 08-61 for additional details.

On July 1, Medicaid clients were able to access a new stop-smoking benefit that includes counseling and prescription drugs. See Memo 08-22 titled "Prescription Drug Program: Expanded Smoking Cessation Program and Changes to the Washington PDL and List of Limitations on Certain Drugs".

Tamper-resistant prescription pads became a requirement for Medicaid prescriptions April 1, 2008.  Effective October 1, 2008 prescription pads must contain all three tamper resistant features.

Vivitrol IM. DSHS will pay for six monthly injections of Vivitrol IM for Medicaid clients who are alcohol dependent; who meet the clinical criteria and who are enrolled in a DASA chemical dependence treatment program. DSHS will only pay for Vivitrol IM distributed directly to prescribers through Specialty Pharmacies (not retail pharmacies). Those Specialty Pharmacies handling Vivitrol IM are Caremark, Coram, Pharmacare, and Curascript.

Clarification on Healthy Options Managed Care Clients that self refer, using override 2:
Clients enrolled in a HRSA managed care plan may receive services under separate contracts from the following three entities:
  • Community Mental Health Centers
  • Family Planning Agencies
  • Health Departments

Transportation: Clients that need help to pay for gas to drive to a scheduled visit to one of HRSAs designated second-opinion physicians can contact their local Transportation Broker for a gas/fuel voucher. Transportation Broker staff will ask some routine screening questions when taking the request. Clients will be asked for proof of vehicle insurance, current vehicle registration, and a copy of a current drivers license.

HRSA for Medicare Part D co-payments. A numbered memo for pharmacists is available for billing purposes. See Memo 06-07. An update was distributed on February 23, 2006. Memo 08-09 includes a change to the co-pay amount that affects dates of service on or after 01/01/08.

Save time and cut your administrative burden by endorsing the state's preferred drug list (PDL). If you are an Endorsing Practitioner and wish to prescribe a non-preferred drug from one of the PDL classes, you simply indicate "dispense as written" on the prescription and the pharmacist will fill the non-preferred drugs as written without questions.
