Mental Health Drug Initiatives and Stakeholders Workgroup

In late 2004, the Medicaid Chief Medical Officer, Jeffery Thompson, M.D., convened a broad workgroup of providers, stakeholders, pharmacists and government representatives to begin a series of discussions on preferred drug selections in the area of mental health. Formation of the workgroup followed recent findings of duplicate therapy by the American College of Physicians, American Society of Internal Medicine and the American Psychiatric Association, among others. Based on current research and feedback from health-care stakeholders in Washington, the Medical Assistance Administration is working to refine the hard edits that will guide better utilization of elective serotonic reuptake inhibitors and atypical antipsychotics, as well as other drugs used in treating mental illness.

If you would like to join the workgroup's regular e-mail list, please contact Jonell Blatt.
